I fear we're headed for a new dark ages. The question is who will play the role of the monks - Christian and Islamic - who preserved the knowledge of the previous civilizations (Greece and Rome)? If those lonely monks hadn't been sequestered away from society, copying by hand copies of old classics, they'd have been lost forever. With the woke now trying to erase our civilization's great works - or at least re-write them - how will future generations ever come to know what they had taken from them?
Excellent question - it is probably a less challenging prospect to preserve works of art like paintings, sculpture than works of literature and other such documentation that is too easily digitized. I don't know what that may mean for performances of plays, opera, or film, symphonies and the physicsl scores of those works.
Couple thousand year trend is that society gets better for top .1% and slightly better for everyone else. Don’t forget recent US crisis like Revolution, 1812, Civil War, WWI, Great Depression, Dust Bowl drought, WWII, Vietnam, etc. We have far more freedom and ability to travel around the world, to publish what we want (eg here), and to not get harmed than billions before us.
I'm sort of a prepare for the worst, hope for the best, but I'm not sure how I prepare for a world where we're lopping off people's limbs because they "feel" they should be handicapped.
And did I just write that sentence? I just wrote that sentence. JFC
I saw the Fox article and I thought, "It's just Fox being Fox, right?" So I typed in "transabled," and I found the Pink News article and the JSTOR article. My jaw hit the table. It's real! It's like the world lost its mind and then replaced it with a meth-addicted squirrel's.
I'm shocked I live in an age where that is a sentence that has to be written in all seriousness and I'm rather wishing I didn't possess any of those qualities. I think life would be easier.
You know the gap between the first world and everyone else got too big when this craziness is entertained. I am aligned with what others have said; let them do what they want as long as taxpayers don’t have to pay a cent for it. Indeed I don’t care if they chop off their head with a rusty razor to get the suffering they so desperately need. What cringey bullshit to be such a narcissist that they would talk about doing such a thing to themselves. Peak self absorption attained! What leech on society’s ass possibly has the time to think about doing that to themselves? They’re mentally ill for sure but I’m so fed up that I’m ready to give them what they say they need to thin this herd out. Ditto for urban crime like we have in Philly; average 10 murders a week and 60 shootings a week. Law of Diminishing Returns will reduce those numbers over time too.

Looks like that comment dinged your radar as well.

WTactualF?
I know. I find that awfully specific.
"Given that many patients will go ahead with amputations in any case and risk extensive injury or death in doing so,"
I say, knock yourself out - this is an excellent DIY project for those so mentally ill.
My only suggestion is that they amputate at the neck.
Thank goodness for Jane Orient, MD!!
I kind of have to agree with you about the DIY project. At a certain point, you just say, "Have at it."
"this is an excellent DIY project"
I'm all for it on two conditions:
- Patient is capable of consent. And gives it.
- It's self financed. Just like when my DIY project is finishing the basement.
I'm fine with just the self-financed condition. Anyone who seeks to undertake such an endeavour is likely incapable of such consent.
Your logic is unassailable
We're witnessing the collapse of a culture, with the promise of something better to come.
I'm holding on to that last part.
Depending on who's making that promise, and their track record of promises kept, I'm not holding out a great deal of hope...

Okay, so that's 2 For, 1 Against on the Shiny Happy People Futures. Or maybe Lil's more Neutral but hopeful. 1-1-1? -ish?
I have to think about this a bit and get back to you before I cast my vote.

Yeah. That's a pretty big thumb on the scale. *nods sadly in agreement*
I'm still only about 2/3 the way thru the article and I've felt like that the whole time.
THIS is why I put Bailey's in my coffee.
Bailey's in my coffee is strictly a holiday tradition (the weekend before Thanksgiving until the first weekend after the new year).
In between, it's Jameson's Irish Whiskey - unless I'm sick, then it's cognac.
Variety is the spice of life, my friend.

I don't see the problem - are you shocked that you are possessed of common sense, reason, abstract and critical thinking skills?

In short, they need bigger things than themselves to occupy their minds. Agree with you there.
God, I miss Frank Rizzo.

The Ron White clip is hilarious 😂
I had literal tears while trying to literally not LOL so as to not awaken the sleeping-in Mrs. Pi... Holy Schamokes, that was funny. Thanks for that.
That's one of my favorite routines ever. You're welcome.
LOVE Ron "Tater Salad" White!!
